The Rio Grande
The Rio Grand begins high in the mountains of southern Colorado. It meanders south through New Mexico. It passes Albuquerque then becomes the boundary for the US Mexican border all the way to the gulf of Mexico.
The Mexicans call the River Rio Bravo. Most of the year the river has very little water in it. It is only in the spring that snow melt increases the size of the river. The river water is over allocated to Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico because the flow was measured during a wet year. In 2001 a sand bar formed and the river did not even make it to the Gulf of Mexico. Subsequent dredging and more snow melt caused the river to wash the sand bar out to sea in the Gulf of Mexico the following year.
The river has been the boundary between the United states and Mexico since 1848. Millions of years ago the river flowed into a large lake called Lake Cabeza de Vaca in the Rio Grand rift. About 1 million years ago the river escaped and began to flow Southeast eventually reaching the Gulf of Mexico. During slavery times before the civil war, Slaves would flee across the river to freedom in Mexico.
The first major border town pair of cities is El Paso, Ciudad Jaurez. Then comes Presidio, Ojinaga Laredo, Nueva Laredo Mcallen-Hidalgo, Renosa, Brownsville , Matamoros Del Rio, Ciudad Acuna Eagle Pass, Piedras Negras.
