El Tajin

Pyramid of Niches

Pyramid of Niches

El Tajin is an ancient archeological site in northern Mexico. The area and the pyramids were built in the first century AD until 1300 AD. The city was invaded and burned  in 1300 AD by Chinchimec invaders. The city continued to be inhabited for another 100 years or so but no new construction was started and the area was  abandoned by the time the Spanish arrived in the 1500’s.

The first archeologist to visit the site was Diego Ruiz in 1785. The first excavations was made by Jose Payon from 1943 to 1963. The Mexican Institute of Anthropology and history has been restoring the site since the 1980’s.

The ceremonial center covers about 1 square kilometer. The site is best known for the Pyramid of Niches which stands some 60 feet high and has 365 niches. Originally the pyramid was topped by a temple but that has been long gone and not even ruins remain.

El Tajin is designated a world heritage site. It is a short journey into Mexico and it takes you back in time to an age of Empires in the New world.
