Nestled in the Santa Rosa mountains just a few miles south of Julian shines a jewel of a lake. It is called lake Cuyamaca. It is known as a family lake and has over a hundred family campsites. It is one of the better California lakes for camping lake lodging.

The Lake

Lake Cuyamaca is well supplied with over 44,000 pounds of fish. It is the only fishing lake in the San Diego area that stocks trout for trout fishing. The fishing lake also contains Florida bass, small mouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, and sturgeon. It has fishing boats for rent including paddle boats for a fun time on the lake. It even has a GPS to help find the fish in the lake. In 2006 the Alpers trout were added making it the only lake in the San Diego area that has trout fishing. While you can fish and boat on the lake swimming is not allowed. You can bring your dog with you as long as you clean up after him and keep him on a leash.

The Restaurant and General Store

If you are looking for a place to have a nice meal, the Cuyamaca restaurant and general store is the place to go. Based on an Austrian theme, your meal can be served in the restaurant or outside on the patio while you look at the lake and the surrounding countryside. If you need supplies for your campsite, the General store next to the restaurant is the place to go.

Camping

Over 100 campsites await you and your family for camping lake lodging at lake Cuyamaca. There are over a hundred miles of trails at lake Cuyamaca . You can go hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking, at Lake Cuyamaca . There is even a horseback riding, mountain biking trail that goes all the way around the lake. There are 2 main campgrounds at lake Cuyamaca, Green valley at 4000 feet and Paseo Picaco at 5000 feet. Campsites have a picnic table and a fire ring which is great for fish frying after trout fishing. The campgrounds also have a restroom and pay shower area. Campgrounds are $15 to $20 a night depending on season. Each site is allowed one vehicle and up to eight people. An extra vehicle is $6 a night. There are many activities and things to do at Lake Cuyamaca and a fun time can be had by all.
